M44 and M42

Does any one know what is the difference between the M44 and the M42. anyone have pictures, please.

M42 engine - older 318's before 1996 138hp, less torque --> 1.8l
M44 engine -newer 318's after 1996 same hp ,but more torque --> 1.9l

do you know how much more torque? I had always been told they were both the same because of the more restrictive dme.

the m42 has 127 torque and the m44 has 133 torque not much of a difference but the m42 gets most of its torque at 4500rpm and the m44 gets it at 4300rpm.

M42 is a 1.8liter engine (with OBD1) and M44 is post 1996 318i with a 1.9liter engine (with OBD2). BMW made a 1.9 liter engine in 1996-1998 to match HP of older version with the new OBD2 requirement. Most parts are the same on the car but always be sure to ask for the correct engine type when you buy parts.
