Umm.... I do think you can do it.... but you'd also have to change the transmision.... and the drive shaft... and the rear end.... not to mention the computer system would have to be changed.... ... so.. basically the entire engine.... electrical part of the engine... transmision.... drive shaft... and rear end.... I think thats about it.... you might have to adapt a few mounts... but I'm not sure. Good luck with that..!
its been done, you would need the z3/m coupe rear end, and drive shaft, and then the m3 engine and ecu etc. and tranny and then some custom work for the motor mounts

the thing is more of a sleeper, most people know its a 1.8l until it kicks there ass

that's exactly my philosophy. I'm just gonna wait for a while to sell my 325is, and get an M3. Much less work, about the same amount of money, and a nice dose of delayed gratification.
i plan on swapping a 3.2l m3 into a '96 318ti over the winter. i dont believe you absolutely have to change out the tranny and rear end. (although plan to anyways) my one buddy did an m52 swap into a 94 318is and kept the tranny, drivetrain, etc stock. he did it about a year ago and to my surprize he hasnt blown any of it up. and believe me this guy uses the power.

all i have to say is i hope you have lots and lots of $$$$$ if you want sleeper, why dont you go buy an m3 and put 318 badges on it? haha cost ya way less, just to do all the wiring for the swap its anywhere from 60-80 hours or labor and at 30-60$ an hour! ouch thats just wiring but you have fun! haha
Originally posted by thekid@Jun 30 2004, 07:52 PM Wait a sec guys, he's gonna have a hard time putting a E36 M3 rear end into a E36 318ti. The 318ti has the E30 rear end and the mounts ect are different I do believe. You'd prolly have better luck with a E30 M3 engine and rear end. If thats what your talking about then please disregared. but if you were talking about the #36 M3 engien then you'll proll need the rear sub frame from a Coupe E36 and hope you can line it up.
read my post up top, i said a z3 or m coupe rear end. the m3 rear end wouldnt work, because of the driveshaft wouldnt work
