I would never buy an ///M3 with anything but a 6 speed, stick shift transmission. It would defeat the purpose and joy of having it to have an automatic, including an SMG. Iv heard lousy things about the SMG tranny and would avoid it for poor driveability. The new dual clutch tranny (DCT) is far better, but even that I personally wouldn't want. In your situation , I'd go for as late a model E46 as I could find and afford in a 6 speed and go enjoy it!
