A/M Button next to Shifter.

I own a 1995 325i. I'm new to BMW's so bear with me. There is a button to the left of my shifter with an A and M. I'm assuming it stands for Auto or Manual for the tranny.What is its purpous? I'm also wondering if there is supposed to be a button on the shifter it self, to put the car in gear. It appears there could have been one there at one time but it doesn't exist anymore. If your wondering I did buy the car used so I'm still going through it. I fixed the head gasket now onto
more adventures. Any info would be great. Thanks

You can change the gears manually, but it changes very slowly. It doesn't work well at all in my opinion. My car used to be automatic.. If you want better acceleration leave your car in "3" but dont press the a/m button.

The M stands for manual; it is really single gear only, not intended for shifting gears. Put in a gear and it will not shift. Useful for driving in the snow, pulling away from a stop sign in a higher gear and not spinning the tires. Also useful for driving up steep hills.
