spotteddog is an unknown quantity at this point
I have a 1997 328i convertible that is missing one lug nut. How much trouble is it to get only one lug nut.... would a BMW dealer sell only one? Thanks for the input, folks.

Yes the dealer should be able to do that. You could always get the locking lugnut for your car and get 4 of them 1 per wheel.
