"Getting a LSD was an option on 3 series. (standard on m3's) I am not sure about the winter package thing. The only thing I know is that my friend has the window sticker for his 325i and under the options he has the winter package and the lsd option. It very well could vary from year to year. A very easy way to tell if you have a lsd is if the car wants to kick out when spinning the tires around a turn. It is possible to drift a non-lsd, but you have to be in the corner very hard."
Is this true??? I have kicked out plenty of times while coming out of turns. Once I spun the car completley sideways on a dry road, going less than 20 around a turn (I did have bald tires but still, doing a complete 180 just because I accalerated a tiny bit too quickly out of a turn. I know our torque is pretty good, but I didnt floor it or anything)
Also I read here (dont remember who said it but anyway) "you can test if you have an lsd or not by lifting your car and testing it by: turning one of the rear wheels with your hands... if the other wheel spins the same direction (as the one you are spinning) then you have an LSD. If the other wheel spins the opposite direction (as the one you are spinning) then you DO NOT have an LSD.
yes lift the car, spin one wheel if the wheel opposite wheel turns the same way you ahve lsd, if it spins opposite way than you dont. (at least that is what i was told) another way is to check the diff itself it should say its lsd or not, however most lsds are pretty dirty and you wouldnt be able to see it clearly
LSD's have an "S" stamped on them, if you can't look under your car, give the last seven digits of your vin# to the dealer and have them run a vehicle history on it, it will give every option your car came with from the factory.

If so, rev to 4k and drop the clutch. 1 tire mark = open rear end, 2 = LSD.
That's my favorite way to check.

That's not true. If both wheels have equal traction they will spin even without a limited slip.
The only real way to know is to spin the wheels on a lift or check the tag. All those other ways like pulling onto half grass half pavement are flawed.

OK, I know this post topic is pretty old by now. BUT, it's nearest to my question anyways. I have a '93 325i (not IS). I was doing a brake job last week, so i decided to spin one of my wheels by hand to see which direction the other wheel spun. The opposite wheel spins in the SAME DIRECTION as the wheel that I spin by hand. I read above in this topic that this is a sure fire way to tell if you have an LSD or an open diff. I also read though, that the LSD didn't come on 325i, only later model 325IS's. Any thoughts?
