Smile low revs high revs hunting

I have a 1998 e36 316i, and just recently the idle tickover has started to be erratic, It either runs at below 1000 rpm and go up and down or it sits at approx 1300 rpm. When the car went for it's mot check I said to my mechanic to check out the idle tickover, when I got the car back the next day he told me the idle problem was fixed but within me driving the car back home the problem started up again, any help would be very much appreciated.
