Got this problem has really got me stuck, I'm hoping someone on here can shed some light on it.

OK, when the car is cold, or been left standing, if the wheels are straight, I can grab hold of the top of the tyre, and pull it towards me. At best guess, there is 1-2mm of play, the wheel moves and you can hear a faint metal on metal knocking sound.

If I turn the steering to full lock it doesn't do it.Likewise when the car's been on a run, there is no play in it.

With the wheels straight, I pull the tyre/wheel, and put my finger against the brake rotor by the caliper. You can feel the wheel and disc moving, but not the caliper and it's mounting bracket. Getting someone to pull the wheel, there is no obvious movement from the steering joints etc on the inside of the hub if i look at it from under the front of the car.

Anyone got any clues? If the wheel and disc are moving, and not the caliper and mounts, I'm thinking this is something to do with the inside of the hub being worn out. Best guess I've got, and that's the limit of my knowledge, which aint much.

The car is a 94 316i E36 with 100,000 miles on the clock

Cheers

Chris
