A little help for a newb please

Hello everyone my name is Tony I have wanted a 318ti since around 97 and i finally broke down and bought one.It's a 95 and I love it but im having a little trouble.I haven't dug into it yet I wanted to post and maybe get a little input first maybe a known problem im not sure .
The prolem is that it sometimes idles very rough and sometimes it idles smooth but when i star to pull out it boggs down and i have to either floor it or feather the throttle to accelerate.When i have it wide open it pulls but its not smooth its almost like chugging and i noticed that if i hold the pedal in any certain position it seems to loose all spark for a few seconds then it takes off and lets out a nice backfire(the backfire is what makes me think its losing spark and not fuel).
I know it should have way more power than it does now and im not gettin the BMW expierience that I want lol
Anyone know where I should start or know of any known problems that would cause these symptoms before i start spending$$$
Any help or input will be greatly appreciated

Ok a lil update I found my plug wires were arcing very bad so i taped them up just as a temp fix til the parts store gets the new ones.

its not missing as bad now but it still acts like im trying to push a truck or something lol.It feeels like its chokeing or something .....very strange and hard to explain.My alternator is starting to go out thats why my lights are pulsing could this have anything to do with it?

Please help me guys any suggestions at all? also the fuel filter looks new I know that doesnt mean it is but it looks new so...

Just change your wires and your plugs, do not get bosh plus fours they do not work well in our cars, i would get $2 copper plugs before the bosh plus fours i recommend NGK spark plugs or Denzo's
