Where can I get a copy made of my key? I know that I can't just do it anywhere.

Yeah, I second that.... The dealer ordered a key for me based on the VIN.

The dealer. Expect to pay anywere from $40-60 depending on what kind of key you want.

Actually, your key will be $125. As BMW upgraded the keys to chipped keys, the cost of the key goes up. You could have another key madew elsewhere, but at best it would just unlock the door.

Any one try one of the flip keys on ebay? I've been wanting to get one, but wasn't sure if the dealer would cut it for me if I didn't get it from a BMW dealer.

starting in 95 BMW introduced them into the key.

Yeah I got one, it's cheap crappy, but people go nuts cause it can flip out. The dealer said they'd cut it for me, but I went to a different place cause the guy that cuts keys wasn't in that day.

Yea, mine is a chipped key. good security measure i think. Well if their that much the key is gonna have to wait, i just spend $124 + s&h on a keyless remote, also lost. thank god i had a spare key.

All e36 bmw's with a build date after 1/95 has chipped keys. This is when the ews anti-theft system was added.

I have a 96 318...and the key I have only has the little light on it, unless that is part of the chip...how would I know if it was chipped or not??? I'll check my build date, but I don't think a car built in 95 could be passed off as a 96 used

4/95. There's no indicator that I have that anti-theft system.
