Keyless Entry Battery Change

Sometimes I have to push the button on my remote keyless entry like ten times before it works. Can I just change the batteries in it? Someone told me I would need to synchronize it with a second remote entry... but I only have one used
Also, what kind of battery should I get?

i was told that the when you buy the new battery to swap out the old one, you should do it under a minute before the memory is erase/lost. this came from the dealer.
