key won't turn all the way?!

I have a 92 e-36 and just the other day I went to start her up and the key would go in but it won't turn all the way. I can turn her on but it will not turn any farther then that. One person said you need a new ignition others have said you can fix it, your key barrel is shot, maybe key is bent I doubt that, some one even said my locking mechanism is jammed, another said you have plastic pieces in there that need to be removed from some plate cracking from temp changes. My car is also stuck at my office so I can't just run out side and do some quick troublshooting. One person recommended getting a push button starter temporarily to over ride the problem. will that work? I'm not the richest person in the world so I can't just go out and buy a new ignition like that. plus I like to know my options. I have access to a free push button also. Please help me.

I think, sometimes, i got the same problem. my wil not turn to start the engine. here is what i do: try to pull out the key and listen if you here a click! if not, put the key back in and pul it out while turning the key a little bit. than you must heare a click and the pin for steeringlock is "armed". put the key back in and turn it. that is what i do. may be it works for you too!
