Intermittent engine cutout

Hi everyone, newby John from Brisbane, Australia here. My daughter's 1996 E36 318i has developed an intermittent engine fault where the engine just stops and then a few hours later will let itself run again. Two garages have been unable to isolate the cause of this very frustrating fault!! Any ideas on what it may be or best way to identify it? Many thanks

Have you gotten the OBD system scanned for trouble codes?

This can be caused by a few issues, and a scan of the OBD can help narrow it down.
