Importance of Power Steering Fluid?

Took my 95 318i to dealer 4 months ago and was told I'm leaking power steering fluid and would need a new something or other to stop the leak. They didn't have the part at the time, but told me it would run about $350.

I was skeptical, since I had never felt any trouble with the steering...until now. I still have "power steering", but I believe at times I can feel a slight vibration in the wheel while idleing...and hear a faint whine sound when I turn the wheel.

Can I do any damage to anything else by not getting this fixed asap? In other words, I can live with it as is, but am wondering if I will hurt anything else or make it worse by not repairing....

it may just break all together and be more to repair later.

or it may just become very hard to steer...

just keep pouring ATF fluid in there and it should help with the sounds and vibration.

Keep throwing the stuff in, and FIND THAT LEAK!

and plug it with some chewing gum or something.

or replace the speific part that is leaking if you can.

Does anyone know the type of ATF fluid required? The book is vague....
