Ignition Locked

Hey, I entered my parents car today and slightly turned the steering wheel and heard the lock sound that it does. Then tried to turn turn on the car and they key in the ignition will not turn, even budge. This has happened in my e36....but all I did was turn the wheel back, but this time everything is locked, ignition and wheel.

Turn the wheel a little bit (I know it's locked but there's play in it) to take the pressure off the key lock and the key should turn freely.

Happens to my car all the time.

when this happens to me i pull the wheel back and forth (with the little play that it has) while putting pressure on the key until it turns. i think pressing the brake helps as well?
