Hello I Am a newbie and i have had my bmw sitting in my yard for a year. it is a 1992 325is and today was the first day i took it for a drive. so i took it to get a oil change. before i changed the oil it was running fine . then i drove it around a bit and it was driving fine. when i got home and parked it i was sitting in the car and it started idling a lil rough it went from 500 to 1000 back and forth . then the damn car shut off but it would start back up can anybody please tell me what the hell is going on with this car. this is the first time it has been drivin in a year so i am not sure if this is normal.

My poor Bmw has become a headache since i brought it home last march.

I have the same Problem on my 95 325is but it doesn't shut the engine off. (knock on wood) I've been reading about it a lot. It's probably you Idle Control Valve (ICV) being dirty. take your ICV out and clean it really good. I haven't done mine yet But I will do it really soon. hope this thing works for you.

yeah do that its not hard in a way just tricky you have to pull it out there with a huge hose on it then fannagle it back in there i did it under a hour as a precaution

Good advice to clean ICV, also clean the MAF sensor too, for a dirty MAF sensor can cause erratic idle.....too!

i also had the same problem on my 325 is 95 i clean the icv and prob went away, also found out that the dinnin chip i had, had something to do w/it so i swap it out with piggy back.
