Idle Problem

Hello Guy's
After changing my head gasket and putting car all back together it won't idle.
It seems to surge but when i step on gas it's ok and the exhaust seems to smell.
Did i do something wrong because i took off the head without removing the vanos thinking it would save on timming.
I am a new BMW owner and it's a 95 325i i bought it not running so this makes things hard for me and don't know this engine.
Thank You
