Idle Problem

my 318iS has an idling problem, and i was talking to someone who supposedly knows alot about engines.

he said the if i took the thing off the front of the manifold (on top of the engine) - looks like a black plastic plug connected to the manifold and clean it - it should be fixed.

is this true?

You may need to be a little specific. Idle irregularities may be caused by a number of issues.

The black thing he spoke of, would that be the Idle Control Valve... ICV...

In order for us to help you please specify when the irregularity arises. At start up? After driving for 5 minutes? On the highway?

well it seems to be happening all the time - when i start the engine it happens, and when its been running it happens, i can however sometimes control it to a certain extent - by revving the engine, and then it falls below 1000 rpm's.

But i've been out for a drive in it tonight and have noticed that its started jerking whilst driving - as if its got a blockage somewhere.
