It wouldn't hurt to have a second car handy, or at least a friend who owes you a favor so that you can go out to the hardware store in case you forgot something, or you didn't get enough of somethign else, or if you broke anything.
As far as I know, every single person who has done it without a kit thinks it was not worth it. My only recommendation would be that you buy the kit. KO-performance offers a kit a very good price. Look for the thread in the Sponsor's Corner.
