humming sound while car is off - BMW Forum

this morning i turned off my car and waited inside for a while when i noticed a humming sound coming from behind the climate control panel. it sounds like a small motor (dynamo) running.

do you have any idea what it might be?

its like a sound of an electric razor although not as loud.

do you have any such sound in yours?

YES I do, it sounds like theres a high pitched vibrator behind there for about 2 mins then it stops.

I thought it actually sounded more like a regulator type tranformer buzz. when a regulator is dealing with more amp withdrawral than it can handle. thats the type of sound I get. Although mine seems to be coming slightly lower from behind the computer.

mine has always done that. im not sure what it is but im pretty sure its normal and nothing to worry about. plus i find the noise kind of soothing.:lol:

I gets me the same noise. Me thinks it's normal... just one of them there odd german thinga-ma-jiggers... it be like a kitty purring... she must be happy

Mine does the same thing. Someone told me what it was but I forgot. It's nothing to worry about though. I've had 2 e36's and they both did it.

isn't there an electric motor in the climate control unit that pulles air across the temp sensor? thats what i thought it was.

Glad to hear its normal. I've been afraid that its a problem and I've been dreading the 'hey whats wrong with your car' remark from my friends. Now I can tell them that its her getting ready for bed lol

Yeah my friends always ask. Most of them thought it was some special BMW thing. I just let them think that.

Yep its normal if you have been using the climate control. Tell friends it is decompressing the cabin prior to your departure.

yep same here, but in mine i hear scratching noises for about the first 10 sec's, about 3 in a row and then the humming continues for 2min approx!

Normal.

What's not normal is my climate control fan, which is starting to make really-old-fan noises! I wonder if the Bentley provides a fix...I'm not looking forward to tearing apart the dash.
