He guys, I am looking at buying my First Bimmer this summer. I wanted to know how can you tell if the 3 series has a V6 or an inline 6. I'm looking at '97 to '98 or '99. I would love a 328I or 328IS, do either of these come with the inline 6? The reason I would like to know is because I have heard the inline 6 have a bit more torque than the V6, is this true?

All Bmw's have inline 6's. The only V's are the 8's and 12's.

Good to know, Theres so much I don't know about these cars. ghead Do you guys know where I can find a list that has the model year, the engin size, power and what class(or whatever it's called, i.e. E36 or E46 and so on) that a car is? I found one in Performance BMW, but they omitted a few years. I just want to learn which year is what and what it came with.
Easy way to think about BMW is the model number of the car. 3 series is the smaller car that you are probably looking at ex 325 or 328. Then goes to 5 series bigger car all sedans no coupes ex 525, 528, 530, 540 etc. Next is the 7 series the biggest of the BMWs ex 740, 745. Those are the main ones. You also have 6 series, Z, M, and had 8 series. This are not all of them by any means but a way to think of them.
So that explains the first number in the model number. the second 2 numbers are the engine size. Example a 325 is a 2.5 liter engine a 328 is a 2.8 liter engine. This works for all the numbered cars.
Now the E36 and E46 years is what you want to know right?
