I have a '94 318is (automatic) with 120K miles. It runs nicely but isn't as quiet as I'd like it to be. What can I look at replacing that might help insure quieter running?

The 3 series in general are not quiet cars. What kind of noises are you hearing?

Baffles are inside the muffler. And, yes, if it is rattling, you need to replace your muffler. On some 318's there is also a mid-pipe, connecting the muffler to the converter, that might need replacing. I don't know what prices Oem 318 mufflers are. Check with www.pelicanparts.com and www.speedycarparts.com. There are other places, just the two I know. You can find them used on Ebay, but you need to be really careful there.

in the future for my muffler, when it starts to rattle or whatnot, should I just get an upgraded muffler or just stick to a BMW muffler? Are they about the same price?
you sure its not road and wind noise...my cabin was alittle loud until I noticed the rubber lining was sagging on my rear passenger door and when i tucked it back up and re-aligned the rubber trim. the noise went away....
also, the best cure for noisy car is louder systems and speakers!
dynomat. or however you spell it. its used in car audio shops. most people make it look like crap. its supposed to be put on bare metal. but say you do the doors, take off the interior panels, lay out the dynomat, reinstall panels. it helps, a lot. i had a very loud car before and i used this junk all over the place, reduced noise by ..... ehh 40%. it comes in spray or a sheet like material.
