How much does a replacement key cost?

When I got my 98 323, I only got one key. I want a 2nd key just in case.
a. How much will the dealer charge me for a new key?

b. Is there anyone else that can make a key cheaper? I know the local auto parts stores only have old style key machines.

The keys are laser cut so very few people can cut them. Also the keys have a chip in them which is required for the ignition to work. Your best option is going to the dealer. My key was $75. The ones with the light are at least $100.

Does the Dealer actually cut them on site, or do they have to get them from BMW?

Their cut and chipped in New Jersey and overnight couriered to the dealership. Which explains part of the cost.
