I have a 97 328i w/ manual trans. All you people here seem to have top of the line cars. You can get top performance out of your cars. I love my Beemer, but I don't want to spend a fortune upgrading it. I only spend money on needed repairs, and wouldn't change thinks like the muffler for a little boost. However, I do wish I could do something not too expensive that will give me more power. Is there a particular component that will give me wings? I know the computer chip controls alot of things, and is the cause of so many limitations. What is the one thing I could do to boost up my 328 without spending alot money on little extras. I remember I had a 96 Nissan Maxima w/ manual trans. I used to have a lot of power, I could rape anyone, but the 328 seems a little weak.
The 328 should be a fair amount faster than a '96 maxima. If it seems weaker than that car, there is something wrong. Anyway, you are correct about the chip. I'd get a conforti chip if I were youy and only wanted one thing. You can get one from www.turnermotorsport.com.
Edit: You can't get the chip for OBDII, you would have to get the shark injector.

So I could get about 20 extra horses for $250, not bad. So this would be the biggest single addition right? I couldn't find anything there for my e36 which is 97. They have intakes and shark injectors that suit my type. Do they give relatively more horse power, since they seem to cost more then the chips?

No,unfortunately they don't. OBD II doesn't respond as well as OBD I to modification.

m50 intake manifold with a conforti shark injector will give great gains at higher rpms. a crank pulley should give some good hp and torque gains. fan delete kit frees up a few ponies. underdrive pulleys. limited slip differential. m3 cams give great gains but cost a little more.
or upgrading your suspension will make driving a lot more fun

Your car is OBDII so you have to shark it, you can't put in a chip. The shark is the same basic thing just the way you change the software is different(reprogram versus a new chip with different program on it). It will still give you some good gains but not as much as a chip will for the 325. From what I hear the M50 manifold and shark is a great addition like B_w. said.
I'd say you should take a serious look at your car if you feel like its under-performing. I just got through a bad tank of gas and i could feel the difference on the pedal
Mods + BMW = expensive
There are a few mods on the cheapo side that you might find helpful
m50 Manifold--> probably the best $ per pony for our cars. If your handy under the hood you can do it for <$150.
DIY (or cosmos) cold air intake
Fan delete mod
Im probably missing something there, but everything else will cost >$150(alot more hehehe) a pop from there on out.
If your looking for a taste then give the DIY intake baffle removal a try... at least its free
A search on any of those topics should provide a wealth of information.
To do list:
Suspension--- researching
UUC System U TDM- 3/05
M50 manifold converstion 3/05
off to the tuning shop for custom software 4/05
Cams/lightened flywheel, throttlebody........ well lets see what happens
not to get off of topic, but your wrong about the maxima.. a 96 maxima.. had 190 hp's just like your bimmer.. it also weighed 3400lbs.. so your bimmer should be faster.... also the maxima has less tourque then yout bimmer...
anyways... chip is your best bet.. and not too exspensive..
