how to check coolant level

Nah, its not the same thing... Pure coolant is too concentrated to pour straight in the radiator. It won't cool efficiently and will most likely mess up your cooling system...

Your best bet is to buy 50/50 as it is ready to use... however if you want to got the hard way.. then buy the coolant and mix it 1:1 with distilled (demineralized) water...
