how can you tell?

93 325i coupe, guy says there's an 96 m3 swap in it... it's still automatic. valve cover does not say m power on it. how can i tell what engine it is?

Probably. The only way to be sure is by the engine serial number off the block, I believe.

I have read that it can be found on the right (passenger) side of the block, possibly under the headers.

chances are probably pretty good that if the guy had swapped an M motor he'd have the M valve cover on it. It wouldn't make sense otherwise.. take it for a spin.. = ) see if it feels M worthy.
