I'll write a short one here off the top of my head.
I did this on my 97 328i.

To have proper access to the "driver" side hood latch...

1. take off front grills.
2. take off front bumber.
3. take off auxilary fan.
4. take off the plastic molding along the top edge of the "driver" front wheel.
(optional: but helps when you start feeding the new cable in)

To have proper access to your hood release lever...

1. remove the panel under your steering wheel.
2. uscrew the hood release lever cap.
3. remove the foot rest panel.
4. remove the hood release lever.

Then you must...

1. tie a long string to the end of the cable your about to remove.
2. unsrew the hood latch, and pull the cable out from the front.
3. take the new cable and tie it to the string, and pull it through.
4. snap it in the hood latch, and install it back.
5. snap the other end to the hood release lever inside the car.
6. install back the hood release lever, and check for functionality.
7. if the cable is loose, then pull the cable from outside.
7. put everything back on.
