High Idle / Ticking?

Hiya,

I've noticed 2 strange problems with my 1998 318is (4 dr), which might be linked - was hoping someone could help!

The engine idles at around 1700 rpm whether hot or cold, which is way too high.

Also, when accelerating there is a fairly quiet ticking noise which seems to come from 'inside' the dash. No noise when idle, but becomes audible and gets faster as I accelerate. Then foot off the gas at speed and the noise disappears again.

Someone told me the high idle could be to do with a vacuum leak, so I think I'll need to check the gasket on the input manifold. Could this also be the cause of the ticking?

Any suggestions would really be appreciated!

Cheers

Not sure that the "Ticking" is related, but, your high revs could well be a cracked or unseated hose... Even could be a dirty Throttle-Body or failing MAF !!
I would not suspect the ICV because if this was failing then your motor would try to stall !!
