Hi all...just purchased my first bmw a week from this past friday
its a black on black 96 328i 5spd with a 102k miles on it the car has run beyond all expectation(handling acceleration) but ive had a problem for the past 2 nights
I was sitting @ a stop light and my car was idling fine the car then stalled, i was able to start immediately after this the check engine light came on and now the car revs roughly between 500 and 1500 rpms but feels fine beyond those rpms another thing ive noticed it seems to be a lil more sluggish after this happened its happened 3 times now in the past 48 hrs. guessing from the check engine light being on that this could possibly be a cam sensor or the MAF sensor malfucntioning ( this is what i gathered from reading random boards ) if anyone has any idea if either of these is true and how much the repairs coud run for either 1.... any info would be greatly appreciated

the dealer was asking 8995 for it i got it out the door for 7139.41
heres a lil history on the car
1 owner from the cincinnatti area
has all maint. records all the way to 90k
interior is in immaculate condition with minimal wear on the drivers side seat
all guages seem to be functioning
all power options working properly
car has a lil over 102k on it
i think out the door @ 7100 was a deal..... ?????
Sounds like your ICV (idle control valve). Most likely your HFM is fine, but I would either clean your ICV or replace it. Probably replace it if you don't know the complete car history and when the last time it was cleaned/replaced.

WAIT!! STOP!!! DO NOT GET THE HAYNES manual. Get the Bentley manual. You just spent a chunk of change on your car, spend an extra $50 to get the best manual out there. You can get them on amazon.com for $50, also check bimmerzone.com and bimmerparts.com for some good prices. I think amazon was the cheapest and fastest though.

just checked amazon.com, $50.37 Brand new and free shipping. This will be probably the best investment for your car, that is if you plan on doing all the work.

If you can afford it, get the Haynes and the Bentley. It's good to have two sources of info when you're doing repairs. If you can only have one book, I guess get the Bentley. I had a Haynes manual for my Saab 900 and it kicked ass - way easier to use than the Bentley.
Does sound like the Idle Air Control Valve may be gunked up. Don't go so far as replacing it yet - just clean it with a good no-residue cleaner.
If you're check engine light is on, try doing the self-test to figure out the malfunction code.
Also, check your vacuum lines to see if any of them are cracked or otherwise damaged.
Why don't you go have the check engine light read to you? Then you will know exactly what is wrong with the car. This is specifically why the car was designed this way, so you don't have to guess what is wrong....THE CAR WILL TELL YOU! Autozone does it for free, by the way...I too love my 328i.
