| This seems to be a commaon problem, I had this on a previous E36 I had, it was a faulty fuel sender, there are two either side under the back seat.
Also if you fill up with fuel, while the key is turned on in the ignition this can happen, if this was the case, there is a sequence which will cancel it, remove appropriate fuse 46 or 31 i think, turn ignition on but dont start car until cluster lights up, then turn off, replace fuse & it should reset.
