The topic may have been a little dramatic but heres the problem. In my ride I now have a vibration noise that is coming from under the shifter, its an automatic not my first choice but such a good deal I couldnt pass it up, anyway you can feel the vibration when you hold the shifter. It gets increasing louder the faster I go. When I hit 85mph last night I could hear it over the radio. What the hell is going on? My girlfriend also told me it looked like my exaust was blowing out black smoke. Dont know if that is related or not. I have got to drive about 60 miles tonight, am I safe to do that?? Thanks! KJC
hmmm im not sure but when i had a vibration under my shifter (i have a manual) it was the guibo (spelling??) it just a rubber joint that connct the drive shaft the the transmission.

so hard to say really, i suggest checking two things, first one is the guibo disk, and the second could be your tranny mounts.
both are hard to check without getting directly under the car
Black smoke and vibration could be caused by having a cylinder that is not firing, or running excessively rich. Does the vibration continue when the car is not moving? Does is occur when the car is in Neutral or Park?

The vibration is only present when I am in gear and moving. In park or nuetral it idels just like it always has.
It definitely sounds like the guibo disk. Assuming the auto's have a guibo.. BMW dealership will charge $280 to replace. A trusted shop will do it for maybe a hour & a half labor. Get the part online..
I would assume (correct me if I'm wrong) that autos would have a guibo as well because they do basically provide shock absorbtion between the tranny and drive train. Which autos and manuals each have obviously...autos still shift gears and turn the back wheels none the less...
guibo or tranny mounts do sound like a good possibility...
