Help With O2 Sensor

I recently pulled codes from my 97' 318I. The engine light was on and my idle has been acting a bit strange, as well as bad gas milage.

The code reads "P0136" O2 sensor circuit malf. Bank 1 Sensor 2.

I just want to make sure that I am correct, in that I have 2 O2 sensors and that the problem is with the second sensor. The one after the cat towards the end of the exhaust. Not the one before the cat.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated, before I go out and buy the incorrect sensor.

I think you are right. How many miles on the car? If both sensors have over 50K miles you should replace them both.

If you don't replace them both, put the newer one in front and the older one in the rear. The front one does the most work, the rear one is a check.

Im havin' the same problem. My car wont pass smog because of bad o2 sensor. I need a new air mass flow sensor as well. Can anyone post some pics of how these two look like.

how do u "pull codes", I have doubts about my o2 sensors fully functioning!

The guys at Auto Zone, or most shops, can plug in a reader and read and clear the codes.

I just had the same problem and it turned out that something that I hit (probably that tennis shoe that I straddled) pulled out my o2 sensor connecting plug. I could see the wires hangin under the car so I jacked it up and reconnected the plug. AutoZone cleared the code.
