Hi, Im new to this forum, and I signed here cause I want somebody help me makin up my mind.
I will buy a new car and I was thinkin on a 97-98 318ti, Ive always liked bmw's so that is one of my options, my other option is a vw golf 2001, I know there is no comparition between both but ive always liked beammers and i love golfs, I know how golfs are because I have a golf but ive never tasted the bmw as a driver, so could someone help me on how this specific beammer is like?
first off a 318 is a pretty slow car if you get it in an auto... and even in a 5spd it's still slow and might be slower then a golf depending on which version of the golf you get. the ups of having a 318ti is it's small and light and with some simple mods can add a lot of extra HP. the bimmer will out handle that golf any day but most people now days only care about drag racing so handling doesn't mean shit anymore :P Obviously I'm going to recommend the bimmer anyday as I have one and love it even when it's FREAKING BROKE LIKE IT IS NOW YOU PIECE OF SHIT CAR! Sorry my turrets took over.
Anyways, go to edmunds.com and get full specs on both cars. good luck.
I say you upgrade your target BMW and go for that. If you are set on it being a 318ti or a Golf, I would take the Golf. But if I were to buy a new car, I would look for a reasonably priced 6-cylinder E36.

Should'nt you?
for starters which golf, from the price comparisio i dont think the golf you are looking at would be a gti just a normal 1.6-1.8 litre one. I would take the bimmer cos it is rwd, looks 10x better. "cept you need a sedan bmw" and the handling kills the vw anyday. If the golf you were looking at is a vr6 "not sure if still in production" or a gti, GTI for sure

Man, I don't know about the 318ti, But if that's your price range, for no more you can get one with a trunk!!! No matter what though better get a manual. NO AUTO!!! Golf.....I must say NO...Drive a BMW and then you 'll make up your mind really fast..
my old car.. i crashed it in 7 weeks.. had 1200 miles on it.. hit a divider going 60... this was a great car.. guess i didn't have it long enough to enjoy it to the full potential... anyways.. i love my bimmer 10x's more then that car..
i like golfs, but i personally love those TI's its too bad they didnt come with bigger engines. depending on which golf you decide to get, id look into the bimmer , however if you are looking at a higher end golf than maybe look that direction.
I've had both. Drove a Golf for 180,000 original miles, til it rusted out and I brought it to the boneyard for $20, then bought a pizza with the cash.
Now, have a 318. Get the BMW. If you get the Golf, you'll wonder about the bimmer. If you do the opposite, you won't be wondering "Gee, I could be driving a Golf."
dude i would get an R32 i think those are bad ass and most VW's with the right look and mods are sick as hell.. the only 4-cylinder bimmer i would take are the older M3's..
