I look into a used 320i M52 today.
The engine looks fine except the following problem:
It has a really really loud whistling noise when the engine is running.
It was quite 1st time we start it up, but after it warm up then the whistling sound came...even while we drove it.
The sound was so loud that we can even hear it with the hood closed and in a busy street!!!
any idea what the problem is guys??
Also, what is top overhaul?
should I consider buying a beemer that already has top overhaul ?
you may just be hearing the fan in the front of the car, all e36s have those noisy fans, but if its extremely loud and obnoxious its definately not the fan

That could be possible because a warm engine will have slightly more tension on the belts than a cold one because of expansion. But on the other hand, the belt will become more elastic as its temperature rises.

AMG can't build an NA engine that can compete with M engines, so they stick in a supercharger and say their cars are faster. BMW could simply do the same, but they don't out of principle.</span>

Thx for all your suggestions.
I'll check on the pulleys right away
The dealer dod mention about some cover having a hole and that the air passing through that hole is making a noise.
But I was not clear on wich cover he meant.
Another thing, is it safe to buy a beemer that already has a top overhaul?
