I've tried doing some donuts in my e36 328i and it didn't turn out very well. I simply turned the wheel as far to one side as it would go, and floored the gas (after turning off traction control). What am I doing wrong?
Someone suggested putting it in manual mode, staying in first gear, and going, but wouldn't that burn it out because flooring it that long without shifting would cause the revs to go too high...
With out a LSD and about 230hp to the ground donuts are hard to do. Without those two things all that ends up happening is you make a big circle. If it is raining or wet from sprinkers it is possible to do them but they still usually don't turn out too well.
Funny story: I was painting the emblems on my friends GTI, and I ordered him to go get me slurpee thingy (the 7eleven drinks) and when he was gone I jacked his car and went up my street. The funny part is I did a huge burnout, smoke, breakstand, everything (remember is front wheel drive)...I was the first person to ever do a burnout in his car. I later told him, he wasn't mad after I bitched him out about painting the emblems for free.

LSD was an option. I forgot what the code was, but if you look at your differential there is some designation that denotes LSD.
On an unrelated matter, I did see on TV awhile ago this nifty gear thing that replaces part of the open differential and transforms it to an LSD for straightline driving, but it also sensed when the car was turning, and actually disengaed the LSD feature to return it to an open diff. I need to see if I can find it again, and if it would work on a BMW.
For those of you that don't know, open differentials allow one wheel to spin faster than another, thus decreasing the turning raduis. LSDs make both wheels spin, with usually a 75/25 ratio of power going to any given wheel. This ensures better launches, but can decrease handling abilities to a degree.

I thought it helped handlig, also it helps keep the inside wheel from spining... something I get a lot...
that all depends on what you are trying to do. At higher speeds it would be beneficial, but at lower speeds, especially in parking lots, the difference requires more turning of the wheel. For the average driver LSD isn't that great. For high speed cornering then yes, it will help keep you planted.
