Help Does A Blown Head Gasket/head Make Noise?

does a blown headgasket or head make any type of noise?my car overheated

what noise do you hear?
i guess they could if it was really bad. but if it was bad enough to make noise i doubt that it would run very well.

I ended up driving thecar home for a short period while the temp gauge was in the red

Noises came from the engine that sounded terrible like the pistons were overworking

The next morning i was curious to hear how the engine sounded and it sounded normal

but now I am concerned i did some damage to the engine even if it sounds fine.

I looked for oil in the coolant and there wasnt any, and the dip stick showed no whitish color


so I was just curious if you have a blown head or gasket, will it make noise if you rev the engine

if the pistons sounded like they were overworking that would almost indicate no oil. was it like a knocking noise, a rubbing noise like metal on metal, a high pitched sqeek, or did it sound like air was being pushed out somewhere?
either way if it was making any sort of abnormal noise when the temp gauge was in the red something is probablly broken. when ever a BMW gets into the red it really mean pull over and shut it down. thats why they have a big red light that comes on when the needle gets over that far.
you could do a compression test to check for a bad head gasket, or you could take it to the dealer because it sounds like you'll need some work done anyway.

i used to have a 1982 320i that had a radiator leak and i drove it once when it was in the red (to a friends to get soem water) and was ok afterwards, but i shutit off about 2-3 min after it entered the red zone, so not sure how yours is.

there would be white smoke coming out exhaust if head gasket was blown.

I think it's your water pump. I've heard blown water pumps make crazy noises after they went, and that would explain the overheating. How many miles on your pump now? I hopefully that's the problem, it should only be about $250 to have a shop replace for you.

90% of the time if the head gasket is blown you will leak coolant, oil, and blow white smoke.
