Question Help!!

I have a 1997 318i, it was wroking fine and one day it did not want to start, so i started taking off fuse to see if any were burnt and replaced it once i found it, but when i turned on the car my lights, gas gauge, or thermostat gauge did not want to work. I took it to a "professional" and he wanted to charge me $500, 200 for the lights and 300 for the gauges, when I got home I took off the light fuse and put it back in and it started to work my box was not screwed in properly and everytime I hit a bump it keep moving causing it not to work, I think the gauges could be the same problem but I do not know which one relay or fuse it is can anyone help or should I just play the $300, I already ran out of gas twice on the road so i need help asap....Thank you
