heater system acting oddly-first thoughts please

Hi,
I have a 98 318i with air con heating system.
It just started acting up.

It does any or all of the following:

Doesn't come on when I start up. Sometimes comes on later.

If on, often goes off, but LCD is faintly lit, green LEDs in button lit normal, but buttons not working. It may well come back on again, LCD normal.

I turn it off (by turning fan speed down past minimum, bit later it comes on by itself.

Seems like a loose electrical connection may be the culprit, anyone got an idea where to start looking?

I had the same problem on my 1998 328is, the dealer replaced the control unit and the blower motor resistor for almost $600 labor included.

I found later the parts listed for less on the net, but I think that the control unit is supposed to be reset by a dealer.

To give you an idea, the invoice shows 70.40$ for a Final stage unit and 295$ for an RMFD control unit A/ and 2 1/2 hours of labor.
