heat blowing from the passenger footwell...heater/water valve?

hello.
i'm about to take out and clean the heater/water valve, as i'm gettting waaay too much heat blowing from under the dash, and after searching around here, it seems i have a sticking heater valve and it needs cleaning.

after looking at the location, my questions is, how do i detach this? i can see the 3 hose clamps and the TIS simply says:

"Unfasten hoses and disconnect plug-in connection." That's the 'easy' part. Then, i get confused. Do i take this off from the firewall or where the hoses come into the unit itself? either way, it's a reallllllly tight fit.

when i finally get the 3 hoses loose, what is the best way to unhook the part from the rubbery piece that seems to hold it in place...any tips?
