Head Gasket

I lost about 1/2 of my oil to some place in my engine. I see nothing but oil in my over flow tank. It is safe to say that my head gasket is out with out doing the compression test? Im praying to everyone there is to pray to that there is no coolant in my crank case. I just got back from a trip to SD, and I really hope this didnt happen when I was down there.. Car has yet to over heat so I guess thats a good sign... err.

Do any of you guys have any tricks to lock the cams? Because I would have to take the Vanos unit off, and I want to replace my tensioners anyways. Would something ghetto like vice grips work? Or maybe make wooden triangles that would hold it in the back. Or do dealer rent tools?

Call me an idiot by why would you need to lock the cams? Are you talking about taking the cams out? I did find a really good article that explained how to take the cams out of an inline 6 without having to use the special setup that the dealership uses. As a matter of fact in the same article the guy took the head off without having to remove or do anything special to the cams at all.

You need the cams locked at TDC to put the Vanos unit on/off correctly.
