Apparently the stealership says I need this fixed/replaced ($700+).
What is it and is it critical?

Hardy disk = a flexible rubber rag joint on the propeller shaft (aka. driveshaft).
It functions just like a universal joint (aka. u-joint) on a conventional driveshaft design.
