Thumbs down

Please help me out on this one guys...!

Alright so yesterday i had my heart set on changing my skirts to black from grey... so i shopped around for Castrol Super Clean degreaser, but couldnt find it, so i settled for this Greased Lightning stuff

anyway, me and my friend scrubbed the sides with the greased lightning... heres a few pics of our progress....

Ok, so it only took us about 30 mins to make it black on both sides, with some tough scrubbing, and right now were are thinking "Omg, this is awesome, i didnt know it would come off this easy..."

So as we were very happy with our results, the skirts started to dry... then we got this....

THE SKIRTS DRIED BACK TO GREY!! it looks like theyre a little darker and you can see a little black paint through them, but only a little!

whats going on? how could they have been black, then gone back to grey?
did i just like remove the first layer or something? when i wet it again it goes back to pitch black

can someone tell me what i should do? it would take years to remove all the grey, i tried scrubbing for like 10 mins in one area and it did nothing! should i go buy the Castrol Super Clean?

T-Mac. I feel your pain. I was trying to remove my grey as well and I ran into problems: like, there was no paint at ALL under the lower front end of my sideskirt. (???)- I stopped, but now I'm looking to either replace the grey, or continue de-greasing then repaint the entire thing, or just order a set of M3 sideskirts.

Anyhow-whatever you decide check this link out for help:

Here is a picture of my car before I started- if you look closely you'll see some red poking through the grey in the lower-middle section of the skirt.

hey I was reading over and just thinking, I don't have this problem because I have an ///M but is the materal of the sideskirts like the materal of the side strips of black around the car and bumpers??? If so I know exactly what to use and how to get um perfect black and not fade back to gray

No. I know what you mean. The sides are definately not that vinyl/plastic/rubber material that goes around the car. They may be the same carbon steel as the ///M side skirts or some grade of steel. I'm thinking about the ///M replacement sides but they are like $500 + shipping. I may just end up stripping the rest of the gray off and paying to repaint it. Mght as well since I'll be painting over the lower bumper area as well.

You probably rubbed to hard and damaged the paint. Have you ever seen paint oxidized without a clear coat? Wet, it looks great. Dry, it looks like that. With the grey gone it would be wise to clear coat it. Before that though, buy a good polish, sealant, and glaze. Top it off with a good wax. That should cure it.

A clear coat will lock in the shine, although you'd have to to strip the wax first. You could have it done by a good shop for around $200. A cheap place may do it for $50. You can try at your own risk for less.

$200 just to apply Clear coating to the side skirts! Woowzers!

I'm in the situation as T-Macs but I'm going to a "good" body/paint shop tommorrow to have them repaint (w/ paint match) and finish my side skirts , I was expecting to pay about $150 the most for that!

El Presidente, If its just $200 for the Clear Coat alone at a good palce, then should I expect these guys to ask me for $500 - $900 for what I need?

For propper prep and good paint plus clear, the side skirts will run your between 500-700. Keep in mind, this is at a goos shop. Macco will do it for less, but the quality is questionable...

OUCH!!! Not happening with these pockets!

Where is that DIY link again?

Thanks Man!

***Say I notice you live on the Island. I was out at Medford (exit 64 of the LIE) visiting a BMW junk/auto shop- Aaron's Auto-looking for interior parts and rims a few weeks ago. I was taking my car to their guy out in the city, David Auto, who is supposed to be the best in the region for hooking up interior and BMWs.
