Got a '94 318is and when I shift from 4th to 3rd while I am driving hard, it makes a crunch sound before it engages to 3rd. I am pretty damn sure that I have fully pedal the clutch to the medal before I make the change. Does anyone know what's happening?? Do I need to change the clutch? Gearbox oil etc?
Yikes, our tranny's are somewhat a weak point on our cars. I would start with the tranny fluid and go from there. You may have encountered the faulty guide sleeve problem, but start with the cheapest route first and work up..I haven't expirenced a clutch job yet on my bimmer's so maybe someone else can diagnose or rule that out..
it sounds like the car isn't grabbing the gear properly... for example, the sound that you hear, is like putting the car in reverse while moving forward??
I also have this problem, from 2nd to 3rd and from 4th to 3rd, normally only when i drive it hard.i know it isnt the tranny because it has recently been replaced and refilled and i had the clutch at the same time.
Any Ideas would be great and any suggestions on how to improve the diff?
I had a problem with going into second and not third but mine was when i just started the car. I had to replace the transfluid from a heavy redline MTF to redline ATF. Bimmers use automatic trans fluid even for the manuals. Could still be something worse but that may be a start.
