hi.i am a newbie to the forum but would like to ask all you beemer drivers out there about my gearbox.got a 325i 92 palte with an anoying habit on crunching from 1st to 2nd and when shifting down from 3rd to 2nd.new clutch ,new fluid bled the cylinder. still doing it ,can anyone help?
Hmmm....i'm a newbie to the world of BMW's myself, but this isn't the first car that i've driven either. The only insight I can really give you is if the "crunching" sound you describe is coming from the gears themselves, i.e. is the sound coming from close to where your hand is when you shift? If that is the case, it sounds to me like you have a worn synchro. See, in a modern manual transmission, there is a device on the face of a collar (gear selector) that allows the collar and the gear to make frictional contact with each other before the teeth of the gears connect. This causes the collar and the gear to synchronize speed, eliminating the need for double-clutching. (for more info on all that, check out: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm )
The bad news is I don't think it's very cheap to replace the synchros, but the good news is, it's an opportunity to upgrade a part that is rarely upgraded. I hope that helps and Good Luck.

thanks nookatee,do you know if the box from an e36 m3 will fit the 325i.or do you know of anywhere i can find out.
thanks for help again
I'm not too sure about that. Like i said, I'm a newbie to the BMW world myself. The only thing I can tell you is to go to a parts dealer website, try to order an M3 gearbox and then try to order the 325i gearbox. If the part numbers are the same (i'm not even certain you can order a gearbox individually or what), then they're the same part and therefore compatible. Otherwise, talk to a BMW-certified dealer/mechanic. I hope everything works out for you. Keep us posted.
