Gauges randomnly cutting out!

Hello, 'Camaroyal' here again, With my lemon, lol anyway, here's the problem I am having, sometimes when I am driving the car (My BMW 318is coupe 1993 UK) all the gauges will shut off with all the needles returning to 0. So I will be going along not knowing how fast I am going, how much petrol I have etc. Sometimes the gauges will then randomly come back on. I am usually running the radio/cd player when this happens if that's any help. Also when it was doing it last night I had my lights on. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on what it could be and how to fix it? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! C.

Hello,

I would try the most obvious 1st, replace the appropriate fuse/fuses, may be cracked & only working intermittently, unlikely I know but possible , then I would check the connection behind the Speedo, unplug & replug, see if any gung in there, check for any loose wires,



Beyond that I’m not to sure, could be dry joint in printed circuit board of the binnacle??

Hi, Haven't had time to check the fuses yet or the connection in the back, (lol taking it on a cruise was more important, although I did manage to fix my handbrake travel which had been really loose) but just a thought here: One of my friends who's into cars said it sounds like it could be a bad battery if the gauges keep cutting in and out randomly. Does this sound possible? Thanks C.

Unlikely i think your alternator would supply the power needed, but would nt hurt to change if its u/s
