Gas mileage

I have purchased a 97 318i in very good condition. Did all the fluid and filter changes etc. I have used bp 93 gas and have been getting about 23.1 miles per gallon. This is all city driving and short runs with an occasional 10 mile expressway trip. Is this what I should be getting on mpg?

You don't need to use 93... unless by express way you are trying to say that you are European in which case if I remember the funny conversions correctly then 93 is our 89 in which case good for you, that is right... however, since you use MPG I'm guessing you aren't. You can use 89. Follow?

23 is doing pretty well in the city, is it an auto or a 5spd? You might just be able to squeeze out a bit more depending on how you drive it and the tranny. I wasn't disappointed with anything in the low 20's when I had my 318 for the city. But I drove mine a little hard for the 4 banger.

I use 93 bp octane because my mechanic stated that when he pulled heads on older bmw"s that those that that burned premium had cleaner injectors and less carbon build up. Yes, it is an automatic.

That does sound like very decent city mileage. How many miles on the car?

There is 98,000 miles on the car, but it is still very tight.

For an auto you are doing amazing for city driving. Keep it up.

The "cleaner" burning higher grade fuel is not true. Just don't buy cheap gas. Buy from Shell, Texaco (also shell now) or other major gas provider that already has some fuel treatment in there.
