I noticed when I was driving in LA this weekend that my gas gauge is acting a little strange. When I let off the gas completely, the gas gauge soemtimes stays in the middle, usually around 20 mpg while I am moving. When I am at a slight roll, and have no gas, it will do the same thing. Sometimes the gauge will go 2 Zero when I have no gas though. Whats up with this? could it just be the harsh stop and go driving?... any ideas?
My fuel gauge has been acting goofy too. A couple of times when I have filled up the gauge goes all the way to empty and stays there. Then a day or so later it starts working again. Strange....
I'm pretty sure that the gauge that shows MPG is measured by fuel flow. Actually how much fuel your pump is told to push corresponding to your throttle movement.
If you let off the gas while going 35mph... then it will zoom to the left and be out of the veiwing areas... upwards around 40+ mpg. if you floor it... then it will go the opposite.... what your saying is that when your not going any where... its going towards the right side... around 8mpg????
Most common cause is a faulty fuel sending unit (either gummed up or contacts need cleaning). Unfortunately, for most of us it is in the fuel tank and co-located with the pump. I had similar problems with my 1988 750 and ended up replacing the sending unit.
