Gas Cap

hey guys, you know the gas cap, when you take it off is it suppose to be dry? i mean completely dry? because when i took mine off it had some moisture on the rubber part.. and the local mechanic said maybe that may be the one causing the engine light to be turned on, because when hooked up the comp it said P#### Valve Leak (Small)... but the thing is, it turns on and off everynow and then, not sure if i should take it in to the dealer or what.. used

For starters, just get a new gas cap. It's the cheapest first step to troubleshoot. Have the light reset and see what happens. The check engine light is a common event with the gas cap.

you can reset the check engine light? how do you do that? i thought it just turns off automatically once the problem is fixed? hmm guess ill stop by the dealer tomorrow and pick one up, it just bothers me because it usually turns off in a day or two and it'll be fine for another day or two then turns back on!! ghead

You either have to get a code reader/reset tool, or search this forum for a DIY on making your own reset device. Just keep in mind that this is somewhat of a common problem with these cars. Never ignore the check engine light. The most common cause is either a loose gas cap or the light coming on some time after a gas fill up.
Most cars will reset themselves after the problem has been corrected. I never waited because I have the tool.

I cannot remember where I read about the gas cap issue, but here is some more advice...

When you get a new cap, rub some petroleum jelly (vaseline) on the rubber seal to keep it from breaking down. That can also help to keep the light off.

hmm guess ill have to wait again, i checked the gas cap and i pushed it in some and when i popped it back in, the light turned off... so i think it really is the gas cap, ill get a new later... but will having a loose cap damage the car in any way? thanks
