The fuel door lock is actuated with the general door locks.
The actuator could be malfuctioning. You can ckeck this out by leaving the fuel door wide open then go to the passenger door and lock/unlock it with your key. You should be able to see the metal stem in the fuel door go in and out as you lock and unlock the passenger door. If this isn't happening then the actuator is not working. Check wiring connections to it from inside the trunk.
Good luck.

The metal stem is not going in and out that is how I know its not locking.
I want to know what actuator it is to replace it. The wiring connection is solid I have yet to check the voltage when locking/unlocking.
i have read that they lock on our cars, but the cap on my 325is doesn't lock. even when i double lock the doors! it just twists right off, why is this?
lol, i'm not sure either, neither the door nor the cap locks on my car. i don't see how the door could lock tho, it just flips open and closed with no latch. i thought the cap would be what gets locked down, anyone?
I don't understand how you guys can get so confused.
Since the beginning of this topic we've been talking about the fuel door. That's the metal door you see from the outside which flips open sidesways, and not the roud black fuel cap that you rotate by hand. Geeeesh !!!
The fuel door locks .... yes, locks when you normally lock all your doors. The fuel cap doesn't lock, unless some of your cars have a locking cap which somebody purchased at an autostore. The BMW standard cap doesn't lock. The security relies on the locking door.
The locking door has an small actuator which controls the little black metal stem you should see going in and out when you lock your doors. This actuator is located just behind the stem and should be accessed from inside the trunk. You will have to remove the trunk lining.
Now, I hope this will clear things up.

on the E39 cars and E46 cars the flap locks but never seen that on a E36 car.
you gotta post a picture of that...maybe the previous owner modded your feul door to lock.

lmaoarifc, i am 100% with Delmarco. i have never seen this little black metal stem that locks the fuel door. lol, maybe they didn't amke the 1995 318 and 325 models with locking fuel doors, lol. seriously tho, take a picture, that would help more than anything else right now. me and Delmarco are on the same level and we're both stumped.
I had the the same problem, honestly dont replace anything until u grease or oil up the door. when my car was gettin tuned my i thought i had to replace something but all my mechanic said he had to do was lube it up. now it works fine
