When starting my car recently there is a VERY strong smell of petrol coming through the air vents. It only happens at the first start up of the day, after that it seems to be fine. Anyone have any suggestions as to what it might be? Anything obvious that I could check under the bonnet? Thanks, Ben.

Hey, mine has that too! I never really thought about it too much.. but I just got it smoged a week ago, and it passed but... there's too much unused gas sneaking out of it! I don't know what it could be, someone mentioned that my oxygen sensors could be off... Have you had it smoged recently?

Check the fuel lines and the hose clamps for your rubber fuel lines under the hood. Check both feed and return and also fuel pressure regulator. Tehse hose clamps have a tendency over time to become loose.

It's called a "cold start"

Your catalytic converter, and the whole motor in general hasn't warmed up yet. A little bit of unburned hydrocarbons are going to sneak out, and especially if you are inside of a garage, you are going to smell it. If it goes away after a few seconds as the car begins to warm up, you're ok.

Hmm, I guess that "just kidding" post I stuck in afterwards never made it from my head to the keyboard... oh well, it seemed funny in my mind

I'm from North County... you're from Ventura, CA? I have family up there...

A meet? Ya mean there are still places to drive around here without sitting in traffic the whole way? Where? Okay, well, the sad thing is... I'm serious.
